Humorous Online Course Helps Curb Auto Insurance Rates A new online defensive driver education course uses humor to help teach important vehicle safety skills.
BigNews.Biz - Jun 22,2009 - (NAPS)—New Yorkers looking to lower their auto insurance rates may now have something worth laughing about.
A new online defensive driver education course uses humor to help teach important vehicle safety skills. It can be completed entirely on a computer without ever having to visit a third party or take a final exam. Drivers who finish the course will receive a mandatory 10 percent three-year insurance discount and qualify for a four-point reduction on their driving record. With the average auto insurance premium in the state now at $2,456, that could add up to $737 in savings.
In addition to being the only humorous program approved by the New York State DMV, the course is one of only a few in the nation that have been proven effective in reducing both traffic crashes and violations, according to an efficacy study of Basic Driver Improvement courses in Florida conducted by the Department of Highway Safety and Motor Vehicles.
Driver “Edutainment”
Called Improv Aware Driver, the program was created in partnership with the famous Improv Comedy Club and is offered by National Point and Insurance Reduction Course.
The online course consists of 10 simple modules featuring a combination of humorous, YouTube- style video clips that are supported by easy-to-navigate text and graphics covering a variety of driving subjects, ranging from basic traffic laws to more serious issues such as DUI and seat belt use. While the course must be completed within 30 days of registration, it is available 24/7, allowing participants to log in and out as many times as they like to finish at their own pace.
High-Tech Payoffs
The program uses a biometric eight-Point ID verification that verifies every participant by identifying his or her unique typing sequence. As a result, students do not have to visit a third-party notary public for validation or final testing. Upon completion, participants are mailed a certificate that can be submitted to their insurance company, and the New York DMV is notified for an automatic reduction on the driver ’s active point total by up to four points.
A Scientific Approach
Research shows that most automobile crashes occur as a result of the human element or driver attitude. To help reverse that trend, the course was created by psychologists who specialize in the psychology of driving, targeting negative attitudes and behavior of drivers.
Anyone with a New York State driver’s license, regardless of his or her record, is eligible to take the course and benefit from the discount. Students can access the program directly at www.MyImprovNewYork.com.
