BigNews.Biz - Jan 24,2010 - (Washington, DC) – Congresswoman Suzanne Kosmas (FL-24) returned from a bipartisan Congressional Delegation trip to Afghanistan with five of her colleagues. The visit offered Kosmas the opportunity to meet with military and State Department officials about efforts in Afghanistan and allowed her to have a firsthand, on-the-ground view of operations. She received high level briefings from General Stanley McChrystal, U.S. Ambassador Karl Eikenberry, and other officials about progress in pursuing the Taliban and Al-Qaeda and in providing stability to the Afghan people.
“With the President set to request additional funds for the war in Afghanistan, it is important for me to assess the situation on the ground and to hear from military leaders about what it will take to accomplish our objectives so we can bring our troops home as quickly as possible,” said Congresswoman Kosmas. “I have been assured by military leaders that we are implementing innovative strategies to combat terrorists and to stabilize the region, and after visiting Afghanistan and meeting with officials, I am optimistic about the future of our efforts there.”
Kosmas also met with U.S. service members, including troops from Central Florida, to hear about their experiences and to make sure they are getting the support they need.
“It was an honor to meet with our troops, including those from Central Florida, to thank them for their brave service in defending our nation,” Kosmas said. “I was particularly struck by how many had voluntarily reenlisted for additional tours of duty. I will continue to do all that I can to fully support our troops, both while they are abroad and when they return.”
The Congressional Delegation stayed one night in Kabul and flew with troops to Bagram Airfield in the Parwan Province where members visited the military hospital and were briefed by military and civilian leaders on strategies for advancing our mission to stabilize the region and to bring our troops home as soon as possible.
